What is an A/B Test?
Instead of relying on gut feeling, A/B tests deliver hard data about what actually works with your audience. In practice, you can test everything from headlines to button colors to entire landing pages — and make decisions based on measurable results. Especially in e-commerce and Google Ads campaigns, A/B tests are one of the most effective levers for increasing conversions.
An A/B test is a comparison test between two variants of a web page or ad to determine which version delivers better results. In the SEO and online marketing context, two different versions (variants A and B) are randomly served to visitors. The test is run to gather concrete data about user preferences and to optimize conversions, click-through rates, or other KPIs based on that data. For conversion rate optimization (CRO), A/B tests are the standard method.
Technically, an A/B test works by splitting traffic: one portion of visitors sees variant A, the other sees variant B. Results are then statistically measured and compared — for example, how many visitors from each group clicked a button or made a purchase. Tools like Google Optimize, VWO, or Unbounce are needed to track users and evaluate the data. A sufficient runtime and visitor count are essential so results are statistically significant and not based on chance.
In practice, A/B tests should start with a clear hypothesis: “If I change the headline, the conversion rate will increase by 15 percent.” Ideally, only one variable is changed per test (hence the name A/B — not A/B/C/D). After the test, the winning variant is rolled out across the site. For landing pages, CTAs, or meta descriptions, A/B tests are demonstrably effective — but they require patience and sufficient traffic to deliver reliable results. For small websites, the effort is often not worthwhile.
