Shop SEO from a freelancer — why your shop system matters

Not every online store is created equal. Anyone working with Shopify faces completely different technical conditions than someone running WooCommerce, Magento, or Shopware. Each system has its own URL structures, its own template architectures, and its own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to crawling. Generic SEO that ignores these differences costs time and money — without delivering sustainable results.

As an SEO freelancer with more than 20 years of experience, I know the quirks of the common shop systems from numerous projects. I combine technical understanding with clear prioritization: what will measurably bring your store more organic traffic — and what is only interesting in theory?

What sets shop SEO apart from regular SEO

Online stores face structural challenges that do not exist on corporate websites. Thousands of product pages with similar descriptions create duplicate content risks. Faceted navigation and filters produce an endless number of URLs that overload crawlers. Seasonal assortment changes lead to dead links and 404 errors. Without thoughtful SEO optimization, stores remain far below their organic potential.

On top of that, there is competition: in most product categories, you are not just competing with other stores, but directly with Amazon, eBay, and major retailers. That makes a precise keyword strategy essential — a focus on long-tail keywords, specific product variants, and informational queries around your products.

My approach to shop SEO

Every shop SEO project starts with an honest assessment:

  • Technical audit: crawlability, indexing issues, duplicate content, canonical URLs, structured data (Schema.org for products, reviews, breadcrumbs).
  • Site architecture: how are categories and products linked? Which pages receive crawl budget, and which block it?
  • Keyword strategy: which product terms, category names, and informational queries offer potential without too much competition?
  • Content quality: unique product texts, optimized category descriptions, and informative supporting content for technically clean pages.
  • PageSpeed: stores lose conversions every day due to slow load times — PageSpeed optimization is not a luxury, it is a requirement.

Which shop system is best for SEO?

All common shop systems are fundamentally SEO-capable — but the effort varies considerably. Shopify now has a solid SEO foundation, but it is limited when it comes to URL structure. WooCommerce on WordPress offers maximum flexibility but requires more maintenance. Magento and Shopware are built for large catalogs but bring complexity with them. PrestaShop and Gambio are popular alternatives among small-to-mid-sized businesses, each with their own particularities.
