Ad Extensions

In brief

Ad extensions are additional information shown below or next to a Google Ads ad, giving users more context and click incentives.

What Are Ad Extensions?

More extensions mean a bigger ad, higher click-through rates, and cheaper clicks — making extensions one of the easiest Google Ads levers to pull. Simply having them activated counts as a bonus in the Ad Rank algorithm, even if not every extension is shown with every impression. Prioritize call extensions on mobile devices and sitelinks with high CTR.

Ad extensions are additional information shown below or next to a Google Ads ad to give users more context and more reasons to click. Examples include sitelink extensions (links to subpages), location extensions (address and phone), call extensions (phone number), promotion extensions (offers), or structured snippets (e.g., “Amenities”). These extensions take up space on the SERP and make the ad larger and more impactful — which measurably increases CTR.

Technically, this works as follows: you define the extensions in your Google Ads account, and Google automatically decides which ones and how many to show, depending on device type, time of day, and past performance. Not all extensions are always shown — especially on mobile devices, space is limited. However, the mere presence of extensions counts as a ranking signal in the ad auction: campaigns with many activated extensions receive a bonus in the Ad Rank algorithm. This motivates advertisers to use extensions.

In practice, you should activate all relevant extensions — inactive extensions don’t help you. Sitelink extensions with high CTR should be prioritized. Location extensions are mandatory for local businesses. Call extensions significantly increase conversion rates for mobile users. Also experiment with less commonly used extensions like promotion or structured snippets — some deliver surprisingly good results. In general: more extensions = bigger ad = higher CTR and better Ad Rank = cheaper clicks. This is one of the easiest Google Ads levers to pull.
