App Indexing

In brief

App indexing allows app content to appear in Google Search, so users can navigate directly from search results into the app.

What Is App Indexing?

For apps with lots of dynamic content — e-commerce, news, travel — app indexing is an additional traffic channel from Google Search. Engaged users are directed straight into the app, leading to higher engagement and better conversion rates than routing through the mobile website. If your app only shows static content that’s already on the website, the added value is limited.

App indexing (App Indexing) is the integration of app content into Google Search. When a mobile app is indexed, users can access app content directly in Google Search (on a smartphone) — not just website content. Example: if you have the Twitter app on your phone, Google search results can open you directly into the relevant tweet instead of loading the website. This is especially valuable for app makers because it provides an additional traffic channel and higher engagement opportunities. Google has increased its interest in App Indexing in recent years, especially with Firebase App Indexing.

Technically, this works via deep linking: the app defines deep links for its content (e.g., myapp://product/123), and the app is submitted to Google. Google then indexes the content and displays it in search results — with a direct link to open the app (or the website, if the app is not installed). This requires Firebase (Google’s developer platform) and configuring deep links in the app. For dynamic app content that changes frequently, this is important — otherwise Google Search only sees static pages.

In practice, app indexing is particularly interesting for apps with lots of dynamic content — e-commerce apps, news apps, travel apps. If your app only has static content that’s already on the website, the added value is limited. Once properly configured, it works well. For developers, this is relatively straightforward with Firebase. A well-indexed app can generate traffic from Google Search — but not by a large multiple. The main advantage is that engaged users are directed directly into the app rather than the website.
