What Is a Doorway Page?
Google easily detects doorway pages through redirect chains, hidden redirects, and hundreds of keyword variations all pointing to the same destination page. The consequence: penalties up to and including deindexing. If you want to reach different audiences, create real pages with individual content and genuine added value — not just keyword variations of a single template.
A Doorway Page (also called Brücken-Seite in German) is a page created specifically for search engines that serves only as an entry point to another page. These pages are heavily optimized for keywords but offer users little to no value. Typically, a doorway page contains lots of keyword text, but when the user clicks a link, they’re automatically redirected to a completely different page — such as a Landing Page or sales page. Google considers doorway pages manipulative and penalizes them with sanctions when discovered.
Technically, a doorway page often works through redirect chains or hidden meta redirects. The page is optimized for keywords intended to rank in Google, but the content has no genuine relevance to the user. Doorway pages are frequently used to rank for many different keywords — a website might create hundreds of doorway pages for different city names and keywords, all pointing to the same actual destination page. Google detects this abuse easily and classifies such pages as spam.
Avoid doorway pages entirely! They violate Google’s guidelines and lead to penalties. Instead, create real, valuable content that is relevant for both search engines and users. If you want to reach different target audiences, create distinct pages with genuine differences in content — not just keyword variations. Use test pages with clear redirects sparingly and only for real A/B tests, not for permanent operation.
