Bulk Redirect

In brief

A bulk redirect is the mass redirection of many URLs to new addresses, typically as 301 redirects during website migrations.

What Is a Bulk Redirect?

Create the redirect map before taking the old website offline — that’s the most important step in any migration. Avoid redirect chains (A to B to C), as each redirect costs link equity. Keep 301 redirects active for at least 6 to 12 months and check via Google Search Console whether the new URLs are being correctly crawled and indexed.

A bulk redirect refers to the mass redirection of many URLs from old to new addresses — typically as 301 redirects (permanent redirects). Bulk redirects commonly arise when you relaunch a website, change the URL structure, move to a new domain, or implement a different CMS. A large number of redirects is not a problem per se, but they must be correctly configured to avoid SEO damage. Incorrectly implemented bulk redirects can lead to ranking losses, slower loading times, and indexing issues.

Technically, each redirect reduces a small amount of link equity (ranking power) to the target page. A chain of multiple redirects (URL A → B → C → D) should be avoided because Google has to follow each redirect and power is lost. On a relaunch, you should map all old URLs to new URLs with 301 redirects and keep these for at least 6–12 months. Google can process redirects and transfer rankings to the new URL, but with very large numbers this takes longer.

In practice, create a redirect map that maps all old URLs to new URLs before you take the old website offline. Use 301 redirects for permanent moves. Check all redirects beforehand to ensure they don’t lead to 404 errors or other issues. Use Google Search Console to verify that Google is crawling and indexing the new URLs. Most importantly, keep your most important URLs or redirect them to valuable target pages — don’t lose any traffic through incorrect redirects.
