What Is a Buyer Persona?
The IT manager searches Google for different terms than the IT technician — and needs entirely different content. Use personas to structure your keyword research, create audience-specific landing pages, and refine your Google Ads targeting. Create different personas based on customer interviews and analytics data, and review them regularly as your market evolves.
A buyer persona is a fictional, detailed profile of an ideal customer based on real data and research. A buyer persona takes into account demographics (age, gender, income), profession, goals, pain points, purchasing behavior, and communication preferences. Buyer personas are fundamental to an effective content and SEO strategy: when you understand who your ideal customers are, you can create content that directly answers their questions and solves their problems. Without clear buyer personas, you can easily optimize past the needs of your target audience.
Creating buyer personas works through research: you conduct customer interviews, analyze Google Analytics and customer behavior data, look at your existing customers, and read industry reports. A good persona has a name, a photo, a description of their job, their goals and challenges. You can have multiple personas — a B2B website might have a persona for “Sarah, the decision-making IT manager” and one for “Tom, the IT technician.” Each persona has different search queries, keywords, and content needs.
In practice, use your buyer personas to structure your keyword research: what questions does Sarah ask Google? What problems does Tom have? This leads to entirely different keywords and content strategies. Create content for each persona — different landing pages, different content formats, different messaging. Also use personas in Google Ads targeting — they help you address your target audience precisely. Review your personas regularly as your market or customer base changes.
