Click-Through Rate (CTR)

In brief

The click-through rate (CTR) indicates what percentage of users who see a search result actually click on it.

What Is Click-Through Rate?

Click-through rate is one of the few ranking factors you can directly influence through your search result presentation. Optimized title tags and meta descriptions that create curiosity and clearly communicate value can double your CTR — without changing your position. In Search Console, you will find keywords with many impressions but low CTR: these are your biggest quick-win opportunities.

Click-through rate (CTR for short) is one of the most important metrics in search engine marketing. It describes the ratio between impressions (how often a search result is shown) and actual clicks. A CTR of 5 percent means that 5 out of 100 users who see the result in the SERPs actually click on it. Average CTR varies significantly by position: position 1 typically achieves 25 to 35 percent, position 5 only 3 to 5 percent. SERP features such as featured snippets or ads can additionally influence these values.

CTR is primarily determined by three elements: the title tag, the meta description, and any rich result extensions such as star ratings or FAQ dropdowns. A convincing title tag contains the main keyword, creates curiosity, and communicates a clear benefit. The meta description complements with a concrete call to action and relevant details. Structured data (Schema.org) can add additional visual elements to the snippet that make the result more prominent and clickable. Each of these elements should be systematically tested and optimized.

For SEO strategy, click-through rate is a decisive lever: even without better rankings, you can generate significantly more traffic through CTR optimization. Google Search Console delivers the real CTR data for every page and keyword. Identify pages with high impressions but low CTR — this is where the greatest potential lies. Test different title tag variants, use numbers, years, and power words, and make sure your meta descriptions give searchers a clear reason to click on your result rather than the competition.
