What Is Customer Match?

Customer Match is one of the most effective ways to reach existing customers with targeted offers or to build lookalike audiences from your customer list for new customer acquisition. Since the data comes directly from your CRM, it’s more precise than cookie-based targeting. Combined with customer lifecycle goals, you can manage campaigns based on real customer value.

Customer Match is an audience feature in Google Ads that lets advertisers upload their own customer data — typically email addresses, phone numbers, or physical addresses — to target those customers with ads in Google Search, YouTube, Gmail, and the Display Network. Google matches the uploaded data against existing Google accounts and creates an audience list from the matches. The data is transmitted as hashed values, so Google never has access to the raw data.

Particularly powerful is the combination with similar audiences: Google analyzes the characteristics of your Customer Match list and finds new users with similar profiles, expanding your audience to potential customers who resemble your best existing ones.

In practice, Customer Match works well for upsell campaigns to existing customers, reactivating inactive customers, or excluding existing customers from new customer acquisition campaigns. For best results, the list should contain at least 1,000 entries and be updated regularly. Be mindful of privacy requirements: you need valid consent from your customers for using their data for advertising purposes. Combined with thoughtful bidding strategies, Customer Match can significantly boost conversion rates by targeting users who already know and trust your brand.
