What Is Embedded Search?
The search terms from your site search are one of the most valuable but often overlooked data sources in SEO: they directly show what users are searching for on your website and not finding. Frequent search terms without matching content are a clear indicator of content gaps. At the same time, fast, relevant site search improves user experience and increases conversion rates, especially on large e-commerce sites.
Embedded search (also called site search or website search function) is a search function integrated into the website itself that allows users to search for content within the website. This search function generates valuable behavioral data showing what users are looking for — data that is normally not visible in organic search (Google) due to “not provided” since 2013. Embedded search functions are especially important on large websites and e-commerce sites.
Technically, site search can be implemented with various tools: Google Custom Search Engine, Algolia, Elasticsearch, or CMS-native search functions. Search queries can be tracked in Google Analytics (Search Console > Site Search Feature) and provide insights into what terms users search within the site. These data are often more precise than Google Keyword Planner since they reflect real user behavior.
In practice, website owners should activate site search and track the data in Google Analytics (or GA4) to see which topics users are searching for. This is an excellent source for content ideas and keyword research. If users frequently search for a term in site search, it may indicate there’s no good organic entry for it yet. Fast, relevant site search also measurably improves user experience, especially on large e-commerce sites or content-heavy websites.
