What Is FTP?
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) refers to a standardized network protocol for transferring files between a local computer and a web server. Website owners and developers use FTP to upload and manage HTML files, CSS, images, and other website components on the server. While modern CMS systems like WordPress require less direct FTP use, FTP remains relevant for technical SEO tasks that require direct file access — for example, editing robots.txt or sitemap.xml.
Technically, FTP operates on a client-server model: an FTP client (e.g., FileZilla, Transmit) establishes a connection to an FTP server, authenticates with credentials, and can then download, upload, delete, or rename files. FTP transfers files in binary or ASCII mode — binary mode is typically used for images and CSS/JS on websites. SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) is a more secure variant with encryption. For SEO tasks, accessibility is key: only when you can directly edit and upload files can you immediately adjust critical SEO files like robots.txt or .htaccess.
In practice, most website owners today use CMS user interfaces rather than direct FTP, but FTP knowledge is still valuable: for urgent robots.txt changes, crawling issues, or technical SEO problems, direct file access can be faster than waiting for your hosting provider. Learn to use an FTP program and store secure login credentials. Use SFTP instead of FTP — it is encrypted and more secure. Edit critical SEO files carefully and always create a backup before making changes. The ability to quickly fix SEO issues is a major advantage.
