What Is the GDPR?
The GDPR has far-reaching consequences for online marketing and SEO: cookie consent banners reduce the data available in analytics, tracking restrictions complicate attribution, and email marketing requires documented consent. At the same time, the GDPR has driven technologies like conversion modeling, enhanced conversions, and consent mode that intelligently close data gaps. GDPR compliance and good marketing are not mutually exclusive — they just require careful planning.
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) or DSGVO (Datenschutz-Grundverordnung) is the European data protection regulation that has governed data protection and user privacy since 2018. For SEO and analytics, the GDPR is relevant because it regulates how user tracking is permitted, how cookies are used, and how personal data may be processed. A GDPR-compliant website must obtain consent for non-essential cookies and use privacy-compliant analytics tools. Non-compliance leads to expensive fines.
Technically, GDPR requires several measures: cookie consent implementation (must occur before non-essential tracking), a legally compliant privacy policy on the website, data security measures, and user rights including access and deletion. Google Analytics in its default configuration is not GDPR-compliant — it requires specific settings such as IP anonymization. Third-party tracking tools must also be GDPR-compatible. Missing compliance can result in legal warnings.
For practical SEO, GDPR means: use only GDPR-compliant tracking tools (Google Analytics with IP anonymization, Matomo, Plausible Analytics, etc.), implement a consent banner, and clearly explain in your privacy policy what you track. Google Ads with Enhanced Conversions is also GDPR-relevant because hashed customer data is transmitted. GDPR and good tracking are not incompatible — it just requires planning and the right tools.
