What Is Geotopicality?

For local SEO, geotopicality is one of the decisive factors: Google prefers websites that have established themselves as authorities for a specific region. This is especially relevant for service providers, tradespeople, and retailers who want to be found within a concrete service area. The stronger your geotopicality, the higher you rank for location-based queries and in the Local Pack.

Geotopicality is a concept describing the connection between a website and a specific geographic area. High geotopicality means Google recognizes a domain as a topical authority for a particular region or city. Local businesses, regional news portals, and city directories typically have high geotopicality for their service area.

Google determines a website’s geotopicality through various signals: the physical address in the Google Business Profile, local backlinks from regional websites, location-based content, local mentions, and NAP data (name, address, phone number). The server IP address and the top-level domain (.de, .at, .ch) also factor in. A website that consistently writes about SEO in a specific city and receives links from local sources builds strong geotopicality for that region.

For your local SEO strategy, geotopicality is essential. Create location-specific content that delivers genuine local value — not just generic text with city names inserted. Build relationships with local websites, associations, and media.
