What Is Grounding in AI?

For your AI visibility, grounding is critical: AI search engines that rely on grounding prefer sources with clear facts, source citations, and structured data. If you prepare your content so that it can serve as a reliable basis for AI answers, you increase the chance of being cited in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Grounding ultimately determines which sources AI systems classify as trustworthy.

Grounding refers in AI research to the process of binding the outputs of a language model to verifiable facts, external data sources, or real-world information. Without grounding, Large Language Models generate text based solely on statistical probabilities — which can lead to so-called hallucinations: plausible-sounding but factually incorrect statements. Grounding ensures that the AI bases its answers on actually existing sources.

In practice, there are various grounding methods. The best-known is Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), in which the AI model retrieves relevant documents from a vector database before generating a response. Google uses grounding in its AI Overviews, for example, by having Gemini compare generated summaries with search results and verified web sources. OpenAI’s SearchGPT also uses grounding to support answers with current web content and provide source links.

For GEO, grounding has far-reaching consequences: as AI systems increasingly back their answers with sources, exactly those websites become visible that serve as trustworthy references. To benefit from this, you should equip your content with clear facts, verifiable data, and structured information. The easier an AI system can identify your content as a reliable source — for example through schema markup and consistent citations — the more likely you are to be cited in grounded AI answers.
