What Are Header Tags?
A clean header structure is one of the simplest and most effective on-page SEO levers — and yet it is frequently neglected. Search engines and AI systems use your heading hierarchy to understand the content structure of your page and identify relevant passages for featured snippets or AI answers. At the same time, clear headers improve accessibility and the user experience for all visitors.
Header tags (also called heading tags) are the HTML elements H1 through H6 that define a hierarchical structure of headings and subheadings on a web page. The H1 tag is the most important heading, followed by H2 for section headings, H3 for subsection headings, and so on. A clean header structure helps both search engines and users (especially visually impaired people using screen readers) understand the content hierarchy of the page.
Technically, header tags enable Google’s bot to quickly understand the page structure. They do not directly influence ranking, but signal relevance and logical structure. A well-structured header hierarchy (H1, then H2s, then H3s, without gaps or disorder) improves crawl efficiency and helps Google identify the most important content blocks. Screen readers can use header tags to create a “table of contents,” which significantly improves accessibility.
For SEO optimization: plan your header structure before writing. Start with a meaningful H1, then use H2s for main sections and H3s for subsections. Distribute 2–4 of the most important keywords across the headers, but do not overdo it — headers are for users, not keyword density. Check the header structure via browser DevTools and maintain consistency across all pages. A logical, hierarchical structure is both elegant and effective for SEO.
