Intent (Search Intent)

In brief

Intent (search intent) is the goal a user pursues with a search query and largely determines which content Google displays.

What Is Intent?

Correctly identifying search intent is more important than any keyword density or backlink: if your content doesn’t match the user’s intent, it won’t rank. A blog article cannot rank for a transactional keyword, and a product offer cannot rank for an informational search query. Analyzing the SERP shows you which intent Google assigns to a keyword — and that’s exactly what you need to align your content with.

Intent, or search intent, is the goal or purpose a user pursues with a search query. When someone searches “best CRM system for startups,” the intent differs significantly from someone who types “CRM system.” Google has recognized that the intent behind a search query is decisive — and ranks content based on whether it fulfills this intent.

Search intent is typically divided into four categories: Informational (the user seeks knowledge), Navigational (the user is looking for a specific website), Commercial (the user is evaluating options before a purchase), and Transactional (the user is ready to buy or take an action). Google analyzes the search query, the user’s previous search patterns, and click-through behavior patterns to determine intent. Pages that best fulfill the intent rank higher. A blog article fulfills informational intent, while an online store fulfills transactional intent.

In practice, content must always be aligned with the intent of target keywords: a keyword like “how does SEO work” requires an explanatory article, not a sales text. Analyzing the SERP for a keyword shows which intent Google recognizes — if Google shows only product pages for a keyword, the intent is transactional. With this insight, content strategies can be built purposefully. Intent mismatch is a common reason for poor rankings: an article on the “SEO definition” won’t rank if users are searching for “buy SEO services.” Aligning with intent is more fundamental than any keyword optimization.
