Juice (Link Juice)

In brief

Link Juice refers to the ranking power that a hyperlink transfers from one page to another and is a central SEO factor.

Understanding link juice is crucial for two of the most effective SEO strategies: optimizing your internal linking and targeted backlink building. By distributing link power strategically to your most important pages, you can deliberately strengthen their rankings. At the same time: each additional outgoing link on a page dilutes the power passed on — so you should place your links thoughtfully.

Juice — in SEO jargon also called link juice — is a colloquial term for the ranking power or link weight that a hyperlink transfers from one page to another. A link acts as a positive recommendation, and this recommendation is “passed on” as link juice. Websites with many strong links receive a lot of juice; pages with few links receive less. This power is still one of the most important ranking factors in Google’s algorithm.

The mechanism: Google interprets every link as a trust and relevance signal. A link from a high-quality, established domain carries more weight than a link from an unknown site. Link juice is passed on: if a page with 10 links points to 10 different pages, the juice is divided among these 10 pages. Nofollow links (with the rel=nofollow attribute) do not pass on link juice — Google does not follow these links. Each page has a limited amount of juice it can pass on.

SEO professionals use this knowledge for internal linking strategies: important pages should receive many internal links from high-quality pages. Too many outgoing links on a page “dilute” the link juice passed on to external partners. A clean internal linking architecture with a logical hierarchy and focus on important pages helps distribute link juice optimally. This is one of the underestimated but most effective SEO instruments — often neglected because it is technically invisible.
