What Is a Knowledge Panel?
Having your own Knowledge Panel in Google’s search results is one of the strongest trust signals for your brand — it immediately shows users that Google recognizes you as a distinct entity. The panel cannot be forced, but can be deliberately built through consistent information on your website, in Wikidata, Wikipedia, and your Google Business Profile. For personal branding and reputation management especially, the Knowledge Panel is a valuable asset.
A Knowledge Panel is the info box that appears to the right of Google’s search results and displays information about an entity (person, business, location, concept). A Knowledge Panel can contain name, photo, description, website, social profiles, Wikipedia link, and further information. This panel is often a user’s first action and can significantly influence how an entity is perceived. A good Knowledge Panel is therefore a goal in personal branding and reputation management.
Google generates Knowledge Panels based on the Knowledge Graph — the knowledge database fed from structured data, Wikipedia, Wikidata, and other sources. For established entities (well-known people, businesses, places), a panel is displayed almost automatically. For new or smaller entities, Google must first gather enough data. The information does not come directly from your own website, but from external sources — which is why it is difficult to “force” a panel, but it can be optimized.
In practice, businesses and individuals should secure their presence in relevant databases: Wikipedia (if eligible), Wikidata, Google My Business, LinkedIn, and other industry databases. All information should be consistent and current. A contact request to Google (via Search Console) can help correct faulty information. The company’s own website should contain structured data (schema markup) with clear entity information — this helps Google recognize the website as an authoritative source.
