What Is Log File Analysis?

If you want to know how Google really sees your website, log file analysis provides the most honest data. It shows which pages Googlebot crawls frequently, which it ignores, and where crawl budget is being wasted. These insights go far beyond Search Console data and uncover hidden indexing issues.

Log file analysis refers to the evaluation of server log files to examine the crawling behavior of search engine bots on a website. Log files contain detailed information about every visit from Googlebot: which URLs were crawled, how long crawling took, whether errors occurred (404, 500), and how efficiently the bot processed the page. This analysis is an important tool for identifying crawl budget waste.

Technically, server log files (usually in Apache or Nginx format) are exported and analyzed, often with specialized tools like the Log Analyzer from Lumar or Screaming Frog. The analysis reveals which URLs Googlebot visited, how much time it spent crawling each page (crawl time), whether there were timeouts or errors, and how crawling has evolved over time. Particularly interesting patterns include: Is Google crawling many 404 pages? Are there long crawl delays on Ajax pages? Are subpages with duplicate content frequently crawled? This information helps you understand how efficiently Google is using your site.

In SEO practice, log files should be analyzed regularly, especially on large websites or after website changes. Results help optimize crawl budget: if Google is wasting time on 404 pages, these should be fixed or blocked. If PageSpeed issues are detected (long crawl times per page), performance should be optimized. If certain URL parameters are generating excessive crawl traffic, these should be blocked via robots.txt or handled through parameter settings in Search Console. Regular log file analysis is especially important for large e-commerce sites or portals with thousands of pages.
