Website Migration

In brief

Website migration is the move of a website to a new domain, a different CMS, or a new URL structure with significant SEO risks.

What Is a Website Migration?

A website migration is one of the riskiest moments for your SEO — without careful planning you can lose 50 percent of your organic traffic overnight. Correct 301 redirects, a complete URL mapping table, and post-migration monitoring are decisive factors. Many ranking losses through migrations are avoidable when you approach the process systematically.

Migration (website migration) is the move of a website to, for example, a new domain, a different CMS system, or a new URL structure. This process is critical for SEO, as improperly executed migrations lead to massive traffic loss, ranking drops, and indexing problems. Google must understand that the old site is transitioning to a new one in order to transfer rankings and backlinks.

Technically, migration works through 301 redirects (permanent forwarding) from each old URL to the corresponding new URL. A page-by-page redirect mapping is essential — never redirect all old URLs to just the new homepage. Additionally, the new sitemap should be submitted, the domain change documented in Search Console, and old backlinks updated wherever possible. Load times must not worsen, and structured data must remain intact.

In practice, a website migration should be planned 2–3 months in advance. First create a complete redirect mapping (old → new URLs), implement all redirects as 301s, test them thoroughly, and monitor Search Console daily for indexing errors. Communicate the domain change internally and externally. Expect temporary ranking fluctuations for 1–2 weeks. Slow, carefully planned migrations go significantly smoother than rushed ones.
