Model Collapse

In brief

Model collapse occurs when AI models are trained on AI-generated data and progressively lose quality and diversity as a result.

What Is Model Collapse?

Model collapse is a growing problem for the entire AI industry: the more AI-generated content lands on the web, the greater the risk that future models lose quality. For content creators, this means original, human-created content with real experiences gains long-term value — both for Google and for AI training data.

Model collapse is a degeneration process that occurs when successive generations of AI models are trained on the outputs of their predecessors. Each generation loses some of the diversity and nuance of the original human data. After several iterations, the model produces only monotonous, erroneous, or nonsensical outputs — it “collapses.”

The mechanism behind this is mathematically understandable: when model A generates texts, it only approximates the statistical distribution of its training data — rare patterns and edge cases are lost. When model B is trained on the outputs of model A, these losses compound. Minority opinions, technical language, cultural diversity, and unusual phrasings progressively disappear. The result is a “digital average” that truly represents no one.

For businesses, model collapse has two dimensions. First as a risk for their own AI applications: anyone doing fine-tuning with AI-generated training data should carefully examine data quality. Second as an SEO phenomenon: the more AI-generated AI slop floods the internet, the more valuable authentic, human content becomes — both for search engines and for AI systems that distinguish between regurgitation and originality.
