Noindex

In brief

Noindex is a meta directive that prevents a web page from being included in the search engine index.

What Is Noindex?

Noindex is one of the most powerful and yet most risky SEO tools: used correctly, it cleans the Google index of duplicate content and unimportant pages. Set incorrectly, it can remove your most important pages from search results overnight. Especially after relaunches, you should systematically check whether noindex tags are set correctly.

Noindex is a meta directive (Meta Robots Tag or HTTP header) that prevents a web page from being included in the search engine index. With the HTML tag <meta name="robots" content="noindex">, website owners can explicitly tell Google and other search engines that a page should not be indexed. This is an important control tool for indexing management and saves valuable crawl budget.

The mechanism is direct: Google continues to crawl the page (unless “nofollow” is also set), but does not index it and does not show it in search results. This is useful for internal pages like login pages, privacy policies, test pages, filter pages in online stores, or duplicate variants. As an alternative to the Noindex directive, website owners can also use robots.txt or a canonical URL to control indexing. The Google Search Console shows which pages are tagged with Noindex.

In practice, Noindex should be used deliberately for pages that have no SEO value or waste ranking signals. A common mistake is accidentally setting Noindex on important pages — this can lead to massive traffic loss. For a clean indexing strategy, a crawl audit with tools is recommended to identify which pages should be indexed. Especially during relaunches or technical SEO projects, intentional indexing control is essential.
