PageSpeed Insights is a free tool from Google for analyzing and improving the load speed of a website. The tool uses real-world data from the Chrome User Experience Report (how much traffic the page actually has) and loads the page in a lab (simulates page performance in a standardized environment). The result is a score from 0–100 for mobile and desktop, along with concrete recommendations for action. PageSpeed Insights is one of the most important tools for SEO audits and performance optimization.
Technically, PageSpeed Insights uses Google’s Lighthouse engine in the background to measure page performance. It takes into account Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), First Contentful Paint (FCP), Time to First Byte (TTFB), and many other metrics. The tool divides recommendations into categories: “Opportunities” (quick wins), “Diagnostics” (deeper issues), and “Passed Audits” (what’s already working). PageSpeed Insights also integrates real data from the CrUX report to show how real users experience the page.
In practice, PageSpeed Insights should be used regularly for important pages. A score below 50 is problematic and should be addressed; a score above 90 is good. The prioritized recommendations (at the top of the list) should be implemented first. Typical quick wins are: compressing and converting images to WebP format, enabling lazy loading, minifying JavaScript, and loading critical CSS inline. After each optimization, PageSpeed Insights should be run again to measure progress.
