Passage Ranking

In brief

Passage ranking enables Google to independently rank individual text sections within a page for specific search queries.

What Is Passage Ranking?

Passage ranking is one of the reasons why even long, comprehensive articles can rank for specific search queries. Google evaluates individual text sections independently of the rest of the page. For your content strategy, this means: well-structured articles with clear, self-contained sections have more ranking opportunities than unstructured walls of text.

Passage Ranking refers to Google’s ability to independently rank individual text sections within a web page — not just entire pages. Google can therefore evaluate a specific paragraph from page A as relevant for a search query and include this passage directly in search results, even if the entire page is not optimally suited for that specific query. Passage Ranking was announced in 2019 and has been steadily expanded. This means: a comprehensive page covering many topics can rank for various sub-keywords, even without a featured snippet.

Technically, Google uses NLP algorithms and E-E-A-T systems for passage ranking to evaluate individual text fragments. A paragraph is treated like a mini-page and evaluated against the search query. If the passage is more relevant than the page as a whole, it can be preferred. Passage ranking is especially useful for longer, comprehensive content covering many subtopics — Wikipedia articles benefit strongly from this, for example. An FAQ paragraph can rank without the entire page being optimized for that FAQ.

In practice, passage ranking means you should write longer, thematically relevant content rather than focusing only on a primary keyword. Structured content formatting (H2, H3 headings, paragraphs) makes it easier for Google to identify relevant passages. Classic good advice — long-form content, clear structure, descriptive headings — works even better with passage ranking. A 5,000-word page with 10 subchapters can now rank for up to 10 different keywords.
