What is Position Zero?
Position Zero is the most coveted spot in search results — ahead of even the first organic result. Whoever holds this position dominates user perception and is frequently used as a source for AI-generated answers. However, Position Zero carries a paradox: if Google displays the answer in full, some users no longer click through. The best strategy is therefore to show enough to demonstrate competence while creating an incentive to click for further details.
Position Zero refers to placement as a Featured Snippet — a highlighted search result above the regular ranking positions 1–10 in Google’s search results. Featured Snippets are short summaries that directly answer the search query and typically consist of text (paragraphs), tables, or lists. Position Zero is especially valuable because the answer to the question is often visible directly on the SERP, which leads to high click-through rates — or Zero-Click Searches when the user already has the answer.
Technically, Google’s algorithm extracts a relevant text fragment or table from the top-ranking page and highlights it for Position Zero. The page providing the Featured Snippet almost always also ranks at position 1–3 for the keyword. Google uses structured data (Schema Markup), HTML code, and content formatting to choose the best fragment. Ironically, Featured Snippets can also lead to fewer clicks when the answer is fully visible — which is why people refer to “Zero-Click Search”.
In practice, Featured Snippet optimization can be implemented systematically. With Google Search Console you can see which keywords you already rank for and which Featured Snippets exist. You can then structure your content: concise definitions in the first paragraph, useful tables for comparisons, numbered lists for how-tos. Short, precise answers (40–60 words are optimal) work better than long explanations. Anyone ranking in the top 3 has a good chance of capturing the Featured Snippet.
