Rendering Budget

In brief

The rendering budget describes the limited resources Google allocates for rendering JavaScript-based pages.

What Is the Rendering Budget?

When important content on your website only becomes visible after JavaScript execution, it competes for Google’s limited rendering budget. Modern architectures like selective hydration and islands architecture solve this problem elegantly: only interactive components require JavaScript, the rest is delivered as static HTML. This ensures Google captures all content and your crawl budget is not wasted.

The rendering budget is a concept in technical SEO that describes the limited computing resources Google allocates for executing and rendering JavaScript on crawled pages. While the Googlebot can process HTML immediately, JavaScript-heavy content must first be processed in a separate rendering queue — and this queue has limited capacity.

Unlike the crawl budget, which determines how many URLs are visited, the rendering budget determines how many of those URLs are actually fully rendered. With websites that rely heavily on JavaScript, it can happen that Google crawls but only sees the rendered content days or weeks later. This means your newest content is potentially invisible to Google even though it is technically available.

To conserve the rendering budget, rely on server-side rendering (SSR) or static generation (SSG). Modern approaches like islands architecture or selective hydration significantly reduce the JavaScript load. Critical content — headings, main text, internal links — should never be loaded exclusively via JavaScript. Test your pages in Google Search Console under “URL Inspection” to see what Google actually renders.
