Responsive Search Ads

In brief

Responsive Search Ads (RSA) are Google Ads with multiple headlines and descriptions that Google automatically combines for optimal performance.

What Are Responsive Search Ads?

RSAs replace manual A/B testing with AI-driven real-time optimization — Google tests thousands of combinations faster than you could manually. For maximum performance, provide as many different headlines as possible: different benefit aspects, unique selling points, and calls to action. Regularly review the asset performance reports to replace weak elements with better ones and continuously improve ad relevance.

Responsive Search Ads (RSA) are a Google Ads format that contains multiple headlines and descriptions, which Google automatically tests and serves in different combinations. When creating an RSA, you enter up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions — Google automatically combines these into various ad variants and learns which combinations deliver the best performance. This format has largely replaced older Expanded Text Ads (ETA) and enables significantly better ad optimization through machine learning.

Technically, Responsive Search Ads uses Google’s AI system (similar to RankBrain) to choose the best combination from the entered elements for each individual user and each query. The system considers historical performance data, the user’s search query, and even the device type. Google runs continuous tests — every possible combination is tested with hundreds or thousands of users to improve performance data. This enables continuous optimization without manual intervention. The format also supports pin options to “lock” certain headlines or descriptions in specific positions.

In practice, advertisers should enter at least 3 different, meaningful variants for each element — not simply the same text multiple times with slight variations. For example, different headlines can highlight different benefit aspects: “Free Shipping,” “30-Day Returns,” “Best Value.” The mix of general and specific descriptions gives the system many combination possibilities. Regular monitoring shows which elements most frequently appear in the top combinations — these should be kept and similar variants added.
