What Is a Retention Goal?

Winning back existing customers is often five times cheaper than new customer acquisition — the retention goal makes this insight automatable in Google Ads. The algorithm recognizes churned users and serves them targeted ads. In combination with customer lifecycle goals and conversion value rules, you can align your entire campaign structure around the customer lifecycle rather than optimizing only for one-time conversions.

The retention goal is a specific optimization objective within the customer lifecycle goals of Google Ads. It targets churned customers — users who have previously purchased from you but have not been active for a defined period. Smart Bidding bids specifically higher or lower for this target group, depending on the value you have defined for a win-back conversion.

The identification of churned customers is based on your imported customer lists. You define from what inactivity period a customer is considered churned and upload the corresponding segments via Customer Match. Google matches this data with logged-in users and recognizes churned customers in the auction.

For practice, the retention goal is particularly interesting for companies with recurring purchases: e-commerce with consumable goods, subscription services, or SaaS providers. Winning back an existing customer is generally cheaper than acquiring a new one, since trust and brand awareness already exist. Combine the retention goal with matching ad copy and landing pages specifically tailored to returning customers, for example with welcome-back offers or personalized product recommendations.
