What is a State Space Model?

For companies using AI tools in marketing, State Space Models are relevant because they could drastically reduce the operating costs of language models. If SSMs like Mamba prevail, AI-powered content creation, chatbots, and analysis tools will become significantly cheaper and faster. State Space Models (SSMs) are a class of architectures for language models developed as an alternative to the dominant Transformer approach. The best-known SSM is Mamba, which uses a selective state-space mechanism. The central advantage: while Transformers have quadratic computational costs (double the text length = four times the effort), SSMs scale linearly. This makes them especially attractive for processing very long sequences.

The architecture is based on a mathematical concept from signal processing: a system that processes inputs through a hidden state, selectively deciding which information to store or discard. Mamba extends this with a data-dependent selection mechanism — the model learns which inputs are relevant for the current task. Unlike the attention mechanism of Transformers, an SSM doesn’t compare all tokens against each other, but compresses past information into a fixed state vector.

For businesses, SSMs are relevant because they enable capable AI models with lower computational requirements. Hybrid models like MoE-Mamba / Jamba combine SSMs with Mixture of Experts and Transformer layers — an approach that combines the strengths of both architectures and reduces the costs of running large language models.
