Visibility Index

In brief

The Visibility Index is a metric for measuring a website's organic Google visibility, calculated by SEO tools like Sistrix.

What is the Visibility Index?

The Visibility Index is the fever thermometer of your SEO strategy: a rising value shows your efforts are working, a sudden drop signals problems like Google updates or technical issues. Use it as an early warning system and for benchmarking against competitors. But keep in mind that a high index alone doesn’t mean revenue — it must always be viewed alongside traffic and conversion data.

Visibility Index is a metric for measuring a website’s organic visibility on Google. The visibility index is not published by Google itself but calculated by SEO tools like Sistrix, Semrush, or Ahrefs. It’s based on how many keywords a website ranks for and at which positions — a website ranking for 1,000 keywords at position 1 has a much higher visibility index than one ranking for 100 keywords at position 50. This metric is a good indicator of a website’s overall performance in organic search traffic.

The calculation works by assigning each ranking a weight: position 1 has the highest value, position 10 a medium one, and anything beyond that significantly lower. The tool then sums up all values — that’s the visibility index. However, this metric is relative: it depends on the tool calculating it and the keyword database the tool uses. Sistrix uses a German keyword list (about 250 million keywords), Semrush and Ahrefs each have their own databases. So the visibility index is a proxy value — good for tracking trends, but not to be relied on too heavily.

In practice, the Visibility Index is used for measuring success: a rising visibility index signals that the SEO strategy is working — more keywords rank, positions improve. A falling index is an alarm signal and requires analysis (algorithmic penalty? competitors grown stronger? technical problems?). For monitoring, you should establish a baseline value and track regularly (weekly or monthly). The visibility index, however, is just one KPI alongside organic traffic, leads, and conversions — a high index doesn’t help if the website doesn’t convert. Still, it’s a practical tool for visualizing SEO progress and benchmarking against competitors.
