Fix Missing Meta Descriptions

How to write effective meta descriptions for your website. Covers optimal length, SERP preview, and prioritization by page importance.

What Is This About?

The meta description is an HTML element in the <head> section of a page. It summarizes the content of the document and appears in search results below the title and URL.

Syntax:

<meta name="description" content="A description of the page goes here">

If the meta description is missing, Google generates its own text from the page content. The result is often unusable — and costs you clicks.

Why the Meta Description Matters

The description influences click-through rate (CTR). A precise, relevant description increases the likelihood that users will click on your result. A missing or weak description reduces traffic — even when your rankings are strong.

Google does not use the meta description as a direct ranking factor. But more clicks mean better user signals. And those do affect rankings.

Optimal Length for Meta Descriptions

Rule of thumb:

  • Desktop: Maximum 175 characters
  • Mobile: Maximum 120 characters

Descriptions that are too long get cut off by Google with ”…”. Descriptions that are too short leave available space unused and appear incomplete.

Recommendation:

Target 155 characters. That works well on both desktop and mobile.

How to Write a Good Meta Description

1. Use a SERP Snippet Tool

Use the SERP Snippet Generator by SISTRIX to preview the description before publishing:

It shows you how the title, URL, and description will look in search results — for both desktop and mobile.

2. Write for the User

The description is not a keyword container. It is ad copy. Write clearly, precisely, and with real value.

  • Address the search intent directly
  • Use the primary keyword naturally
  • Avoid filler words and generic phrases
  • Add a call-to-action where appropriate

3. Every Page Needs Its Own Description

Duplicated descriptions are useless. Google treats them like missing descriptions and generates its own text. Write a unique description for every important page.

How to Handle Missing Meta Descriptions

Step 1: Open the list of affected pages

In the provided Excel file, you will find all URLs where the meta description is missing.

Step 2: Prioritize pages

Not every page carries the same weight. Use the 2D Rank as an indicator:

  • High 2D Rank = important page (e.g., home page, category pages)
  • Low 2D Rank = less important page

Start with pages that have high traffic or high relevance.

Step 3: Write the meta description

For each page:

  1. Analyze the page content
  2. Identify the primary keyword
  3. Draft the description using the SERP Snippet Generator
  4. Check length (155 characters)
  5. Enter it in your CMS or template

Step 4: Technical implementation

Depending on your system:

  • WordPress: Yoast SEO, Rank Math, or similar plugins
  • Shopify: SEO fields in the backend
  • Custom CMS: Directly in the HTML template or via a meta field system

Make sure the description is output in the <head> section.

Step 5: Validate

After implementation:

  • Open the page in a browser
  • View page source (right-click → “View Page Source”)
  • Verify the meta description

Also test via Google Search Console to confirm Google recognizes the new description.

About the 2D Rank

The 2D Rank combines internal PageRank and CheiRank. It shows how important a page is within your website.

Interpretation:

2D RankMeaningActionHighImportant page (e.g., home, main categories)Create meta description immediatelyMediumRelevant subpageAddress by priorityLowSecondary or technical pageOptional

If important pages have a low 2D Rank, there may be a problem with your internal linking structure. Check the architecture.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Keyword stuffing: Do not cram keywords into the description indiscriminately
  • Generic text: “Welcome to our website” does nothing for CTR
  • Duplication: Every page needs its own description
  • Too long or too short: Target 155 characters
  • Outdated content: Update descriptions when page content changes

Summary

Missing meta descriptions cost you traffic. The fix is straightforward:

  1. Open the list of affected pages
  2. Prioritize by 2D Rank and page importance
  3. Write a unique, precise description for each page (155 characters)
  4. Use the SERP Snippet Generator to preview the output
  5. Implement technically and validate

A well-written meta description improves CTR, strengthens user signals, and boosts search result performance.
