If a page doesn’t show up in Google’s index, it doesn’t exist for potential customers. No matter how good your content is — without indexing, there’s no ranking, no traffic, no leads. In my daily work as an SEO freelancer, analyzing indexing issues is one of the most common tasks. The causes are varied, but almost always fixable.
This guide walks you through all the causes systematically and shows you how to resolve indexing problems step by step.
What Indexing Means and Why It Fails
For a page to appear in search results, it must pass through three phases: crawling (Googlebot discovers and visits the URL), indexing (Google analyzes the content and adds the page), and ranking (Google positions the page for search queries). If your page isn’t indexed, the problem lies in phase 1 or 2.
How to Check Whether Your Page Is Indexed
Before you start troubleshooting, make sure the page really isn’t in the index:
site: Operator
Enter the following in Google search: site:yourdomain.com/page-name. If the page appears in the results, it’s indexed. If nothing shows up, there’s a problem.
URL Inspection in Search Console
The URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console gives the most reliable answer. Enter the full URL and check the status. You’ll get a clear answer: “URL is on Google” or the specific reason why it’s not.
Pages Report (Coverage)
The Pages report in Search Console shows all URLs on your site and their indexing status. Here you can see at a glance which pages aren’t indexed and why.
The Most Common Causes and Their Solutions
1. robots.txt Is Blocking the Page
The robots.txt file controls which areas of your site Googlebot is allowed to crawl. A faulty Disallow rule can block important pages without you noticing.
How to check it: Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in your browser. Look for Disallow rules that might include your affected page. Also use the robots.txt tester in Search Console.
Fix: Remove or correct the blocking rule. Note: a page blocked by robots.txt can still appear in the index — but without content. If you want to remove pages from the index, use a noindex tag instead.
2. noindex Meta Tag
A <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> in the HTML header explicitly prevents indexing. This tag is sometimes set by mistake — for example, through CMS settings, plugins, or staging configurations that weren’t reset after launch.
How to check it: Open the page source (right-click → View Page Source) and search for “noindex”. Also check the HTTP headers for an X-Robots-Tag.
Fix: Remove the noindex tag. In WordPress: check the visibility setting under Settings → Reading as well as plugin settings (Yoast, RankMath).
3. Canonical Tag Points to a Different URL
If your page’s canonical tag points to a different URL, Google treats that other URL as the preferred version. Your page is then classified as a duplicate and not indexed.
How to check it: Search the source code for <link rel="canonical". The href value should point to the page itself (self-canonical).
Fix: Correct the canonical tag so it points to its own URL. In CMS systems, you’ll often find this setting in the SEO plugin options for each page.
4. Page Missing from the XML Sitemap
The XML sitemap is your inventory list for Google. Pages not included in it aren’t automatically ignored — but they get crawled with lower priority.
How to check it: Open your sitemap (usually at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) and search for the affected URL.
Fix: Add the URL to the sitemap and submit the updated sitemap in Search Console. Most CMS systems generate sitemaps automatically — check whether the page is excluded by any settings.
5. Poor Internal Linking
Pages that aren’t linked from any other page on your site are hard for Google to discover. These so-called orphan pages receive neither crawl attention nor link equity.
How to check it: Crawl your site with Screaming Frog or a similar tool and identify pages with zero or very few incoming internal links.
Fix: Link to the affected page from thematically relevant subpages. The more important a page is, the more internal links it should receive — ideally from pages that are themselves well-linked.
6. Thin or Low-Quality Content
Google increasingly indexes only pages that offer real value. Pages with little content, auto-generated text, or content that’s better covered elsewhere are often not added to the index.
How to check it: Evaluate your content honestly: does the page offer unique information? Does it answer a search query better than existing results?
Fix: Expand the content with real value. Add your own expertise, experience, data, or practical guides. Quality beats quantity — but a minimum amount of content is necessary.
7. Crawl Budget Issues
On large sites with thousands of pages, crawl budget can become a bottleneck. Google only crawls a limited number of pages per site per time period. Pages buried deep in the site architecture get crawled less often or not at all.
How to check it: Check Search Console under “Settings → Crawl Stats” to see how often Google visits your site.
Fix: Aim for a flat site architecture — important pages should be reachable within 3–4 clicks from the homepage. Remove unnecessary pages from the crawl path (e.g., parameter pages, empty archive pages).
8. Server Errors During Crawl
If Googlebot receives a 5xx error when accessing your page, it can’t read the content. Intermittent server errors cause Google to classify the page as unreliable.
How to check it: Check the crawl stats in Search Console for server errors. Review your server logs for 500-level errors.
Fix: Resolve the server issues. Common causes are overloaded servers, faulty scripts, or timeout problems. Reach out to your hosting provider if needed.
9. New Website or New Page
Freshly published pages aren’t immediately in the index. Google has to discover, crawl, and evaluate the page first. This can take hours — or weeks.
How to check it: Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to check whether Google knows the page.
Fix: Use the “Request Indexing” feature in URL Inspection. Make sure the page is included in the sitemap and linked internally. Be patient — for new domains, initial indexing can take longer.
10. Duplicate Content
If Google classifies your page as a duplicate of another page, only the preferred version gets indexed. Your page will be filtered out.
How to check it: URL Inspection shows whether Google is treating your page as a duplicate and which URL is considered canonical instead.
Fix: Make your content unique or deliberately set the canonical tag to the desired version. Avoid identical content on multiple URLs.
”Discovered – Currently Not Indexed” vs. “Crawled – Currently Not Indexed”
These two status messages in Search Console confuse many site owners. The difference is critical:
Discovered – currently not indexed: Google knows the URL but hasn’t visited it yet. This points to crawl budget issues or low priority. Fix: strengthen internal linking, update sitemap.
Crawled – currently not indexed: Google visited the page but decided not to index it. This is a quality signal — Google considers the content not worth indexing. Fix: improve content, add value, ensure uniqueness.
The URL Inspection Workflow
How to use the tool effectively: enter the URL, run a live test, check status and crawl result, review the HTML source, and click “Request Indexing” if needed. Check again after 1–2 weeks.
Important: “Request Indexing” is not a guarantee. Google decides independently whether to index a page. The old Google Indexing API for general web pages has been discontinued — it only works for job postings and live stream content.
Checklist: Fixing Indexing Problems
- Check with site: operator in Google
- Run URL Inspection in Search Console
- Check robots.txt for blocking Disallow rules
- Inspect source code for noindex tag and X-Robots header
- Verify canonical tag is self-referencing
- Add page to XML sitemap and submit sitemap
- Analyze and strengthen internal linking
- Evaluate and improve content quality
- Rule out server errors in crawl stats
- Check duplicate status in URL Inspection
- Request indexing via URL Inspection
- Check again after 2–4 weeks
