What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

More and more users are asking their questions not to Google but directly to ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini. Whoever gets cited as a source there gains an entirely new traffic channel. AEO combines classic SEO fundamentals with specific techniques like structured data, Q&A formats, and fact-dense paragraphs that AI models can particularly easily process and cite.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the optimization for AI-powered answer engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews. While traditional SEO targets placement in Google search results, AEO aims to have AI systems use your content as a source, cite it, or link to it. As AI chatbots spread, it becomes increasingly important for website content to exist in a form that AI models can easily extract and use — such as structured data, clear paragraphs, and concise definitions.

Technically, AEO works differently depending on whether you’re targeting ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, or other systems. ChatGPT uses its knowledge base trained on data through April 2024; Google AI Overviews crawls live web content and cites it. To become more visible in Google AI Overviews, simple, factual answers to specific questions are important — similar to featured snippets. Structured data (schema markup) can also be helpful to make content more machine-readable and help AI systems classify it.

In practice, AEO means concretely: write content so it’s directly usable by AI — clear definitions, structured lists, Q&A format. Use schema markup for your content, especially for articles, FAQs, and knowledge pages. Ensure your website is visible in Google AI Overviews (verifiable via GSC). However: AEO doesn’t replace good SEO — it complements it. Those who optimize for traditional search results typically also have an advantage in AI search, provided content is high quality and precise.
