AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google displays at the top of search results (formerly Search Generative Experience / SGE). Google uses its AI model (Gemini) to generate a concise, multi-source answer in response to a search query, before the classic blue links are displayed. These overviews are meant to deliver the answer to users more quickly — sometimes without them visiting a website. For SEO, this is a massive shift: page-one rankings are no longer enough; your website now also needs to be cited as a source in the AI Overview.
Technically, this works as follows: Google crawls and analyzes relevant pages, extracts information, and generates a summary with source attribution. The sources are linked, but users often don’t scroll to the classic link because the answer is already visible. To be cited in an AI Overview, several factors matter: E-E-A-T (Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness), structured data, clear answers to frequently asked questions, and good content structure. Pages with Featured Snippet potential also have better chances of appearing in AI Overviews.
In practice, this requires a strategy adjustment: write content that is valuable to AI as a source — clear definitions, step-by-step guides, subject-matter expertise. Use FAQ pages and Schema Markup. Monitor in Google Search Console whether your page is being cited in AI Overviews (new reports available). Create content not just for humans, but also for AI summarization — concise, factual, with little fluff. However: not all queries receive Overviews, and users can disable them. Continue focusing on classic search results and User Experience — AI Overviews are an additional goal, not a replacement.
