Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's experimental AI search with AI-generated summaries, now known as AI Overviews.

What Is Search Generative Experience?

AI Overviews (formerly SGE) are fundamentally changing the SEO landscape: for many queries, clicks on organic results drop by 40–60 percent because Google’s AI shows the answer directly. Your strategy must adapt: focus on unique content that AI cannot easily summarize — original data, expert opinions, and interactive tools. At the same time, you should be cited as a source in AI Overviews, which requires clear structure and high authority.

Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google’s experimental AI search, where Google displayed AI-generated summaries (powered by Google’s Bard/Gemini model) at the top of search results. SGE was a test run available in Google Labs from 2023. In 2024, SGE was renamed “AI Overviews” and is now an active standard feature in Google Search for all users. SGE/AI Overviews mark a fundamental paradigm shift: instead of ten blue links, Google often now shows an AI-generated answer first, leading to zero-click searches and changing the SEO landscape.

Technically, Google uses its large language model (LLM) in real time to analyze search results and generate a concise summary. This AI Overview is displayed at the top, with source references to the websites from which information was taken. The system can also access images, videos, and current news results. AI Overviews are not simply featured snippets — they can synthesize multiple sources and even generate content that does not appear exactly on the sources. This has enormous implications for SEO: when Google shows an AI Overview, clicks on organic results often drop by 40–60%.

For SEO in the era of AI Overviews: focus on first-rate, original content that differentiates — not on generic information that AI Overviews can easily compress. Use structured data and clear source attribution so you get mentioned in AI Overviews. Approaches like entity SEO, thought leadership, and unique research insights help avoid becoming irrelevant. Monitor which keywords show AI Overviews — for these keywords you need a new strategy (perhaps target keywords that do not yet have AI Overviews). Many marketers are experimenting with new content formats (video, infographics, interactive tools) that AI Overviews cannot replace.
