What Is AI Visibility?

AI visibility is becoming increasingly important for your marketing, because a growing share of information search is shifting from Google to AI assistants. When ChatGPT or Gemini explain your industry without mentioning your brand, you are missing a new channel with enormous potential. Through targeted GEO measures — from structured data to citability to grounding pages — you can systematically build your AI visibility.

AI visibility measures how frequently and prominently your brand, products, or expertise are mentioned in the answers of AI systems. Unlike classic Google visibility, there are (as yet) no standardized metrics such as a visibility index. Instead, you must actively test whether systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, and Google Gemini mention your brand for relevant questions — and whether the information is correct.

The factors influencing AI visibility differ in part from classic ranking factors. While domain authority and backlinks still play a role, added to these are brand mentions across the entire web, the consistency of your information across different sources, and the citability of your content. AI systems use RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to extract current information from the web — and prefer sources that offer clear, factual, and well-structured statements.

To improve your AI visibility, you should pursue three strategies: first, optimize your content for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — with clear definitions, structured data, and E-E-A-T signals. Second, establish your brand as an entity in the Knowledge Graph. Third, regularly check what AI systems say about you, and correct misinformation through consistent, authoritative content.
