Competitor analysis is the systematic examination of competitors' SEO strategies, content, and link profiles to derive your own measures.

What Is Competitor Analysis?

Competitor analysis shows you which strategies actually work in your industry — instead of starting from scratch, you learn from the successes and mistakes of your competitors. Especially valuable are content gaps: keywords and topics your competition covers that you do not. These gaps are often the fastest routes to new rankings and traffic because demand has already been proven.

Competitor analysis is the systematic examination of competitors’ SEO strategies, website structure, content, and link profiles. This analysis provides insights into which keywords competitors rank for, what content types they create, how strong their link profile is, and where gaps exist for your own opportunities. A good competitor analysis is the basis for a realistic SEO strategy and helps achieve better results than the competition.

Technically, competitor analysis works through multiple tools and approaches: 1) SEO tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush show which keywords competitors rank for, how many backlinks they have, and which domains link to them; 2) Search Console and Google Analytics of competitors (if accessible through website analysis) show organic traffic; 3) manual SERP analysis shows who is currently ranking; 4) content analysis shows which formats are successful. A combination of this data creates a complete picture.

In implementation, first define 3–5 direct competitors — websites that rank for the same keywords or serve the same target audience. Then analyze each competitor: top 10 rankings, top backlink sources, average content length, common content types (blog, guides, videos), domain authority, and technical strengths. From this analysis, opportunities emerge: which keywords do competitors rank for that I do not? Which content types are underrepresented? Where can we do better? Regular competitor analysis (quarterly or semi-annually) reveals developments and opportunities.
