What Is a Competitive Analysis?
Instead of optimizing blindly, a competitive analysis shows you exactly where your opportunities lie: which keywords competitors occupy, which content gaps exist, and where their backlinks come from. Especially valuable is finding topics your competitors haven’t covered yet — there you can quickly gain ground with targeted content. Investing in a thorough analysis saves a lot of wasted marketing budget later.
Competitive analysis is the systematic examination of the SEO strategies of competing websites. It reveals which keywords competitors rank for, what their website structure looks like, what backlinks they have, and which content drives the most traffic. Competitive analysis is one of the most important foundations for developing your own SEO strategy and identifying optimization opportunities.
Technically, specialized tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Sistrix are used for competitive analysis. These tools show which keywords a competitor’s domain ranks for, what the backlink profile looks like, and which content generates the most clicks. Simpler analysis is also possible: manually review the top 10 results for a keyword, study their meta titles and descriptions, check internal linking, and note content focus areas — a very revealing process that costs little.
In practice, a structured approach is recommended: identify 3–5 direct competitors, examine their top keywords and traffic potential, analyze which content ranks best, and search for content gaps — topics the competition doesn’t cover but that are relevant. This requires an SEO tool or intensive manual research, but saves enormous amounts of wasted marketing budget and reveals where real opportunities lie.
