What Is Internal Linking?

Internal linking is one of the few SEO levers you can fully control yourself — and it is massively underestimated. Through targeted links to your most important pages, you steer where link power flows and which content Google classifies as especially relevant. At the same time, you guide users intuitively to related topics, which improves dwell time and conversion rate. Thoughtful internal linking can visibly improve rankings without a single external backlink.

Internal linking refers to all links between the pages of your own website — an instrument that is often underestimated but belongs to the most effective and underrated SEO techniques. These links connect pages with each other and tell the search engine which pages are important and how they relate to each other. Strategic internal linking guides both users and search engine bots efficiently through the website.

Technically, internal links serve to distribute ranking power (also called “link juice”) from stronger pages to weaker pages. When a popular page links to a less visible page, it passes on trust and ranking signals. The anchor texts of these links are also important — they signal to Google what the destination page is about. Good internal linking also reduces crawl depth (the number of clicks from the home page to a subpage), enabling Google to find and crawl pages more efficiently.

In practice, important pages should be linked to multiple times internally, while less important pages need fewer links. Context and topic are crucial: internal linking should be thematically meaningful, not forced. Good anchor texts precisely describe the content of the destination page.
