Crawl demand describes Google's interest in and need to crawl or revisit a specific URL.

What Is Crawl Demand?

When you understand why Google visits certain pages more frequently than others, you can deliberately optimize your website for this. Pages with many backlinks, frequent changes, or high user relevance receive more crawl demand. Through strategic internal linking and regular content updates, you direct Google’s attention toward your most important pages.

Crawl demand is one of the two main components of crawl budget and describes how strong Google’s interest is in visiting or re-crawling a specific URL. While crawl rate describes the technical capacity (how fast Google can crawl), crawl demand determines the content priority (which URLs Google wants to crawl).

Several factors influence a URL’s crawl demand. Pages that are updated frequently receive higher demand than static pages. URLs with many inbound backlinks signal importance and are prioritized. User interest also plays a role — pages that appear in search queries and are clicked are re-crawled more often. Conversely, crawl demand falls for pages that rarely change or generate little traffic.

You can actively increase crawl demand for your most important pages. Update content regularly and substantively — not just the date. Build internal links and ensure external linking. Use the XML sitemap with correct lastmod dates and avoid crawl waste that draws Google’s resources away from your important pages. The crawl score of a URL directly reflects crawl demand.
