A directory is an online business listing where companies are registered and which sends important local SEO signals to Google.

What Is a Directory?

For local businesses, directory listings are almost as important as the Google Business Profile itself. Google cross-references NAP data from various sources, and inconsistencies can noticeably weaken your local ranking. Regularly maintaining your listings in industry-relevant directories — with identical contact data down to the last comma — is fundamental local SEO work.

A directory refers to an online business listing or specialized portal where companies are listed — examples include Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, or industry-specific directories (tradespeople, doctors, restaurants). These directories are extremely relevant for local SEO because Google uses NAP data (Name, Address, Phone) from these sources to validate the credibility and location of a business. Directory listings also serve as backlink sources and direct traffic channels. A presence in the right directories is nearly as important as a Google Business Profile for local rankings.

Technically, directory functionality operates on two levels: first, Google crawls these sites, indexes the business information, and uses it as trust signals (if a business appears in many reputable directories, it is considered legitimate). Second, users create reviews and photos on these platforms, which provides an additional trust signal. Google Maps and Knowledge Panel are partly fed by this directory data — incorrect or inconsistent NAP data in directories can cause confusion when Google finds different versions and cannot determine which is correct.

In practice, first identify the most relevant directories for your industry: for restaurants, Google Business Profile, Yelp, and TripAdvisor are essential. For tradespeople: industry-specific portals and regional directories. Then all listings must be maintained with consistent NAP — every detail counts. Online directories should be checked monthly for errors and outdated data. Reviews should be responded to regularly to demonstrate engagement. Especially important: do not leave listings unattended — active maintenance is required. Structured management (spreadsheet or specialized tools) helps maintain an overview and ensure all information stays synchronized.
