What Is Image SEO?

Google Image Search is an often underestimated traffic channel that, when properly optimized, can deliver significant visitor numbers. At the same time, image size and format directly affect your Core Web Vitals and therefore your rankings. With the rise of visual search through Google Lens, correct image optimization will become even more important for your overall visibility in the future.

Image SEO is the optimization of images for Google Image Search and for the general search engine optimization of websites. Images are an important component of modern web pages and can independently generate traffic through Google Image Search. With the right optimizations, images can contribute to rankings and visibility.

Image SEO works based on several factors: the alt text (alternative text) is central — it describes the image to search engines and screen readers. Google also analyzes the filename, the image caption, the surrounding text on the page, and Schema Markup (e.g. Product Schema with images). File size plays a role: files that are too large slow down load time and are penalized by Google. The image format (JPEG, WebP, AVIF) influences size and quality. The placement of the image on the page and its contextual relevance to the text also play a role in evaluation.

In practice, all images should receive descriptive alt texts (e.g. “Red Nike running shoes on green grass” instead of “image1.jpg”). File names should be descriptive and hyphen-separated (e.g. red-nike-running-shoes.jpg). Images should be compressed — tools like ImageOptim or TinyPNG help. For e-commerce and news sites, image SEO is especially valuable: high-quality product photos with good alt texts regularly generate traffic from image search. Currently, visual search (e.g. Google Lens) is gaining importance — correctly optimized images will become more important for these new search types.
