Keyword Density

In brief

Keyword density is the frequency with which a keyword appears in relation to the total word count of a page, usually expressed as a percentage.

What Is Keyword Density?

Keyword density is an outdated SEO concept that still misleads many optimizers: aiming for a specific percentage is unnecessary today because Google understands content semantically and evaluates context. Those who orient themselves by rigid percentages risk unnaturally sounding texts or even a penalty for keyword stuffing. Focus instead on natural language, thematic depth, and the use of related terms.

Keyword density is the frequency with which a keyword appears in relation to the total word count of a page, usually expressed as a percentage. Earlier, keyword density was a strong ranking factor — a higher density was supposed to guarantee better rankings. Today it is an outdated concept largely ignored by modern SEO professionals. Google understands content far more intelligently than just counting individual words.

Technically, the calculation is simple: (keyword frequency ÷ total word count) × 100 = keyword density. However, this metric does not account for meaning, context, or user intent. Google today evaluates more whether a keyword appears in the right places (in the H1, in the title, in the first 100 words) than whether it appears with a specific frequency. Very high keyword density appears artificial and is often interpreted as a spam signal.

In practice, authors should incorporate keywords naturally and not try to achieve a specific keyword density. Search engines prefer content written for humans that incidentally contains keywords — not the other way around. Instead, copywriters should pay attention to synonyms, related terms, and semantic variations (e.g. “load time,” “page speed,” “performance”). A focus on readability and user value is far more important than achieving a specific keyword frequency.
