Ranking Factor

In brief

A ranking factor is a signal that influences a webpage's position in search results. Google uses over 200 such factors.

What Is a Ranking Factor?

Many website owners search for the one decisive ranking factor — when success lies in the interplay of many signals. The weighting of individual factors varies by search query: for local searches, your Google Business Profile carries significant weight; for YMYL topics, E-E-A-T dominates. Rather than optimizing for individual factors, you should pursue a holistic SEO strategy that covers technical foundations, content quality, and off-page signals.

A ranking factor refers to a signal or criterion that influences the position of a webpage in search results. Google has built over 200 of these factors into its algorithm, with only a few publicly known. The most important ranking factors are content quality, technical cleanliness, backlinks from authoritative sites, and a good user experience. These factors work together, and there is no single “magic bullet” — a successful SEO strategy must address all relevant areas.

Ranking factors can be divided into three categories: on-page factors (title tag, meta description, keyword relevance, content quality), technical factors (page speed, mobile-friendliness, SSL encryption, crawlable URL structure), and off-page factors (backlinks, domain authority, brand mentions). Google itself has confirmed that content relevance and link quality are the two strongest ranking signals. However, the importance of certain factors has shifted over the years — mobile-friendliness has become significantly more important, while exact keyword density has lost relevance.

When optimizing, the focus should be on the truly important factors rather than minor details. A good strategy is to analyze the top competitors for your own keywords and understand why they rank better. What content do they have? How many and what kind of backlinks? What is the technical structure? This competitive intelligence approach is often more productive than working through a generic checklist. Tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush show which factors have the strongest positions for your target audience.
