Link Equity Distribution

In brief

Link equity distribution describes how link power (link juice) flows through a website's internal and external link structure to individual pages.

How you place your internal links determines which pages receive the most ranking power. A well-designed link equity distribution directs authority precisely toward your most important pages — such as service pages or money keywords. Mistakes in internal linking cause valuable link power to leak into unimportant pages.

Link equity distribution describes how ranking power (link juice) flows through a website’s link structure and spreads across individual pages. Every page that receives backlinks accumulates link equity — and passes a portion of it on to other pages via internal links. How this equity is distributed largely determines which pages achieve the strongest rankings.

The principle is mathematically grounded: a page with ten outgoing links passes a share of its equity to each linked document. Pages that receive many internal links accumulate more equity than isolated pages. Site architecture is therefore critical — pages you want to rank higher should receive as many internal links as possible from strong pages. Conversely, links to unimportant pages waste valuable equity.

For optimal link equity distribution, strengthen your most important pages — money pages, service pages, and main categories — with a flat navigation structure and targeted internal links. Content hubs are excellent for this: a pillar page collects external link equity and distributes it to cluster pages via internal links. Check regularly whether link equity flows into dead ends — pages without outgoing internal links waste the power they receive.
