What Is Local SEO?

About 46 percent of all Google searches have a local intent, and 76 percent of users who search locally visit a business within a day. For tradespeople, doctors, lawyers, and retail businesses, local SEO directly determines customer inquiries and revenue. It combines Google Business Profile, reviews, and local content into a local visibility strategy.

Local SEO (local search engine optimization) is the optimization of a website and Google Business Profile for location-based search queries and local rankings. The goal is for a business to become visible in search results when users look for where to find a product or service nearby — such as “dentist Chicago” or “bakery downtown Seattle.” Local SEO is especially critical for businesses with physical locations or a defined service area.

The technical and content factors in local SEO partly differ from classical SEO: the Google Business Profile is central, with fully completed data (categories, description, opening hours, website, photos, videos). NAP consistency (name, address, phone) across all online directories is critical — discrepancies confuse the algorithm. Reviews and ratings are an important ranking factor in the local pack. Server location, hreflang tags for multilingual websites, and local backlinks also play a role. Google additionally uses the user’s search history and location.

In practice, businesses need to work multiple channels simultaneously: regularly update the Google Business Profile with high-quality photos, post updates, and actively respond to reviews. Enter NAP data consistently in at least 5–10 local directories. Enrich the website with local, location-specific content and create location-specific pages. Build local links and gain mentions at local events, associations, or sponsorships. Continuous monitoring of local keyword rankings and responding to reviews lead to measurably better local results and more inquiries.
