What is Google My Business?
Your Google Business Profile is the most important lever for local visibility — it determines whether you appear in the Local Pack. Complete, up-to-date listings with photos, opening hours, and regular reviews rank significantly better than neglected profiles. For local businesses, optimizing the Business Profile is often more effective than classic on-page SEO.
My Business (officially Google Business Profile, formerly Google My Business) is Google’s free directory for businesses, displaying local information (address, phone, opening hours, photos, reviews). A well-maintained Google Business Profile is central to local SEO, Local Pack visibility, and reviews. The profile appears in Google Maps, Google Search, and mobile search results.
Technically, the Google Business Profile is updated via the Google Business Profile management console. The profile is connected to Google Maps, Search Console (indirectly), and Analytics. Google indexes information such as NAP (Name, Address, Phone), opening hours, photos, posts, questions & answers, and reviews separately from the website index. Ranking in local search depends heavily on completeness, frequency of updates, and review quality. Multiple locations can be managed within one account.
In practice, you should: (1) create and verify your Google Business Profile (by mail or phone); (2) enter all information completely and accurately — NAP must exactly match other directories; (3) upload photos (storefront, team, products, services); (4) create regular posts (at least twice per month); (5) actively manage reviews — respond to reviews, including negative ones; (6) proactively answer Google Q&A. An actively maintained profile can generate 30–50% of local search queries.
