What is MUM?
MUM fundamentally changes the way Google Search works: it understands complex questions across language and format boundaries and delivers more comprehensive answers than previous algorithms. For your SEO strategy, this means shallow content is increasingly losing visibility. Only those who cover topics thoroughly and from multiple perspectives benefit from MUM’s capabilities.
MUM (Multitask Unified Model) is Google’s latest AI model for search engine tasks, working multimodally (text, image, video) and multilingually. MUM is designed to complement RankBrain and surpasses it in complexity by a factor of 1,000. The model can better understand search queries, even when they are very complex or multi-part, and can recognize connections across different content types.
Technically, MUM uses Transformer architecture and was trained on over 75 languages. It processes not only text but also images and videos to deliver relevant results. Example: A query like “How do I train for a marathon if I have knee problems?” is now better understood by MUM, which offers results from text, video, and images. MUM is being integrated into Google Search gradually and will shape future features like “AI Overviews” and better multi-format search results.
In practice, content strategists should focus on multimodal content: combine text with meaningful images and videos. Use structured data (Schema Markup) to clearly label content. Optimize for complex queries (long-tail, phrase keywords) rather than single-word keywords. Build content hubs that illuminate a topic from multiple angles (text, video, infographic). Websites that cover complex topics comprehensively and multimodally have a long-term advantage over pure text-based websites.
