People Also Ask

In brief

People Also Ask (PAA) is a Google SERP feature with related questions and short answers that provides users with further information on their topic.

People Also Ask (PAA) is a section in Google search results that shows four related questions with short answers. When a user asks a question or clicks on an answer, new related questions become visible. PAA is one of the most common SERP features and has grown in importance in recent years — it takes up valuable space on the search results page and can direct traffic away from featured snippets. For content marketers, PAA is a gold mine for keyword ideas and search intentions.

Technically, Google uses NLP algorithms (Natural Language Processing) for PAA to extract questions associated with the same search query. Answers often come from featured snippets or from the top rankings for these related queries. Google initially shows four questions but dynamically expands the list as the user interacts. Answers are shown with a small fragment of the source, which creates traffic opportunities for the ranking website.

In practice, deliberately optimizing for PAA questions is worthwhile. With tools like Google Search Console or specialized SEO tools, you can identify the questions that lead to a page. Content can then be structured to directly answer these questions — with short, precise answers of about 40–60 words. FAQ pages, question lists, and paragraphs with question headings help capture PAA traffic while simultaneously improving user-friendliness.
