ROAS

In brief

ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) measures revenue per advertising dollar spent and is the central metric for evaluating campaign profitability.

What Is ROAS?

ROAS is the metric by which every Google Ads account must be measured: does your advertising earn more than it costs? Note that ROAS only considers revenue, not profit — for a realistic assessment you should also look at POAS (Profit on Ad Spend). In combination with Target ROAS as a smart bidding strategy, the metric becomes an operational management tool for your campaigns.

ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is one of the most important metrics in performance marketing and indicates how much revenue you generate per advertising dollar invested. The calculation is simple: revenue divided by advertising costs. A ROAS of 5 means that for every dollar spent, 5 dollars in revenue were generated. Unlike ROI (Return on Investment), ROAS only considers advertising expenditure and not total business costs like production, personnel, or logistics.

In Google Ads, ROAS is a central control variable for automated bidding strategies. With the “Target ROAS” strategy, the advertiser sets the expected return per advertising dollar, and Google’s algorithm adjusts bids in real time to achieve this goal. The optimal target ROAS varies considerably depending on industry, margin, and business model. For e-commerce stores with low margins, a ROAS of 8 or higher may be required, while service providers with high order values can work profitably at a ROAS of 3.

It is important not to view ROAS in isolation. A high ROAS with minimal budget means little if the revenue volume remains low. Conversely, a slightly lower ROAS at significantly higher budget can generate more total profit. Supplementary metrics like POAS (Profit on Ad Spend), conversion rate, and customer lifetime value provide a more complete picture of actual campaign profitability. For a well-founded evaluation, you should also keep an eye on the click-through rate, as it provides insight into the relevance of your ads.
